The Cambridge Greensand is as described in the adjacent Chilterns region. In recent surveys it has been recorded around Sudbury (Pattison et al., 1993) and Bury St Edmunds (Bristow, 1990) in Suffolk, and in the Ely district, Cambridgeshire. In these areas it is usually less than a metre in thickness, although up to 1.8 m was proved in boreholes in the Bury St Edmunds district (Bristow, 1990). The most northerly occurrence of the Cambridge Greensand is in the BGS Marnham Borehole [TF 7051 0803] (Morter & Wood, 1983). Gallois (1988) noted that over 40 different igneous and high-grade metamorphic rock types, with no known local provenance, formed angular boulders in the Cambridge Greensand, some over 0.5 m across and weighing up to 60 kg.
