Chalk Group Lithostratigraphy: Northern England - Kiplingcotes Marls

Three marls, each about 30 mm thick, occupying a c. 2 m interval (Wood & Smith, 1978), and possibly equating with the Navigation Marls of the Lewes Nodular Chalk Member in southern England (Gaunt et al., 1992). Locally, Kiplingcotes Marl 3 rests on indurated, nodular, spongiferous chalk, analagous to the Navigation Hardground of the Lewes Nodular Chalk Member in southern England (Gaunt et al., 1992). The upward appearance in the succession of the bivalves Cremnoceramus and Didymotis between Kiplingcotes Marls 1 and 2 (Didymotis probably being restricted to this horizon) is a significant faunal change, marking the base of the Coniacian (Gaunt et al., 1992).

Macrofossil Biozonation: topmost S. plana Zone & basal M. cortestudinarium Zone
