Summary
description | English: Figure 2 AFTA data, together with the resulting thermal history interpretation, from two samples of sandstone from outcrops in the vicinity of Mam Tor. Upper plots show fission-track ages of individual apatite grains within each sample, plotted against weight per cent Cl. The horizontal black lines show the trend of fission-track age versus Cl predicted from the respective “default thermal history” (i.e. the history predicted if all units through the preserved sedimentary section are now at their maximum temperatures since deposition). Track-length distributions in each sample are also shown. Stippled shading defines the distribution of track lengths predicted from the default thermal history, and the white shading denotes the measured length distribution. The area of overlap is shown with diagonal hatching. The lower plot shows a schematic illustration of the thermal history interpretation of the AFTA data. It should be emphasized that AFTA defines only the dominant palaeothermal episodes, and cannot resolve the fine detail of the thermal history.
