The base of the zone, and of the Coniacian stage, is defined by the entry of the index species, which in the UK occurs at the Navigation Hardground in Kent (Gale & Woodroof, 1981; Bailey et al., 1984; Gale, 1996). Thus, the base of the zone is in the topmost S. plana Zone of the standard macrofossil zonal scheme (Bailey et al., 1984). There is no data regarding the upper limit of the F. petrocoriense Zone.
