The legacy from the ‘dilute and disperse’ era of landfill design, from mining waste, of former industrial areas and other contaminated lands in Wales, particularly the industrial south of Wales, is a major focus for land regeneration. Part IIA of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 advocates a risk based approach to contamination using the source-pathway-receptor linkage. Wherever land is contaminated or degraded the associated underlying groundwater resources are at risk. A great deal of land clean-up has and is taking place which will ultimately remediate and safeguard both groundwater bodies and those surface waters which receive contaminated groundwater baseflow.
