I have recently retired from BGS. I trained as a geologist (Geology BSc, Imperial College London; Engineering Geology MSc, Leeds) and early in my career became involved with developing digital methods for handling geoscience information. I was involved with the early trials and application of relational databases and GIS to geoscience, including the transformation of maps to spatial databases. I have managed many information projects over the years and played a leading role in the development of GeoSciML and EarthResourceML, an international project to develop geoscience interchange standards. These standards were used as the basis for the development of the European INSPIRE Geology and Mineral Resources data specifications of which I was Editor. I managed the BGS contribution to the EarthServer project investigating the application of Web Coverage Services (WCS) to geoscience data.
