The examples here include: groundwater monitoring at a community level; groundwater management strategies at national and transboundary scales; strategies to improve the quality, operation and sustainability of groundwater wells and handpumps; how different activities such as mining or land use change can impact on groundwater quantity and quality; how people use groundwater in cities and in rural areas for small scale irrigation; activities to improve professionalisation in the drilling sector; and many more.

Africa Groundwater Atlas >> Additional resources >> Case studies

This page is still being developed. Please check back soon for even more content.

These case studies provide practical examples of groundwater-related issues and how they have been addressed in countries across Africa.

The case studies cover issues as diverse as: groundwater monitoring at community level; self-supply and family wells; groundwater management strategies; professionalising and capacity building in the drilling sector; groundwater use for small scale irrigation; water payment behaviour; reasons for water borehole failure; and managing acid mine drainage.

Over the next few months we will be adding more case studies and more resources on some of the issues dealt with in the studies. Please get in touch with us on AfricaGWAtlas@bgs.ac.uk if there are any particular issues you would like to see the Atlas deal with, or if you have any suggestions for additional case studies. Thankyou!

Case studies

These case studies cover many different groundwater issues at different scales and in different climates and natural and political environments. They provide practical examples of how groundwater is developed, used and managed in countries across Africa, with links to more detailed information for those who want to explore further.

- Groundwater irrigation in northeast Ghana
- Acid mine drainage in South Africa
- Water point payment behaviour in Kwale, Kenya
- Land cover changes and impacts on groundwater in southwest Niger
- Reasons for water borehole failure in northeast Uganda
- Community groundwater monitoring in Burkina Faso
- Use and perceptions of groundwater in an urban area - Lagos, Nigeria
- Capacity building in the manual drilling sector in Chad
- The Souss aquifer contract in Morocco (from GRIPP)
- Mozambique Drillers Association
- Zimbabwe Programme for Family Well Upgrading
- Groundwater Dams - examples from Ethiopia and Kenya
- Insurance-style handpump maintenance payments in Kenya
- Transboundary Management of the North West Aquifer System (SASS)
