Overview

Schulz (1979) carried out a biometric analysis of Belemnella from the thick Campanian / Maastrichtian boundary succession at Kronsmoor and Hemmoor, Germany, and compared the results with analysis of Belemnella from other NW European localities, including Norfolk. The result was a subdivision of the Lower Maastrichtian into six zones based on species of Belemnella, and four of these were subsequently recognised in the Norfolk Maastrichtian chalk succession (Schulz, 1985).

Description of the Belemnella zones of Schulz (1979) in the Lower Maastrichtian of Norfolk

The key features of the Lower Maastrichtian Belemnella zones recognised by Schulz (1979, 1985) in Norfolk are described from oldest to youngest. The zones in Norfolk were recognised on the basis of comparison with the Kronsmoor and Hemmoor reference sections, to which all index species range data (detailed below) relate. Alternatively, to find out information about a specific zone, select it from the correlation table (correlation of Lower Maastrichtian Belemnella zones recognised by Schulz (1979, 1985) in Norfolk with the standard macrofossil zonal scheme and local lithostratigraphy).

NB: The species discussed below are based on a statistical analysis of measurements of morphological features. Therefore, recognition of the zones founded on these species cannot be readily made in the field from a visual inspection of the belemnite fauna.
