Overview
Johansen & Surlyk (1990) collected micromorphic brachiopods from disaggregated bulk samples from Upper Campanian and Lower Maastrictian chalk in Norfolk, and compared their distributions with the well documented Campanian/Maastrichtian boundary stratotype section at Kronsmoor,Germany. On the basis of this work, they recognised five brachiopod zones in the Upper Campanian and Lower Maastrichtian chalk of Norfolk, and inferred that a further zone probably occurred in an unexposed interval in Norfolk. The zones are defined by first appearances of species, and the names of each zone comprise the name of the species that defines the base of the zone followed by the index species whose first appearance defines the base of the overlying zone.
Descriptions of brachiopod zones in the Upper Campanian and Lower Maastrichtian of Norfolk
The key features of the Upper Campanian and Lower Maastrichtian brachiopod zones recognisable in Norfolk are described from oldest to youngest. Alternatively, to find out information about a specific zone, select it from the correlation table (correlation of Upper Campanian and Lower Maastrichtian brachiopod zones in Norfolk with the standard macrofossil zonal scheme, belemnite zonal scheme of Christensen (1995) and local lithostratigraphy).
