Category:Chalk Group Lithostratigraphy: Northern England
The Chalk Group of Lincolnshire, Humberside and Yorkshire is lithologically and faunally distinct from that of southern England, having formed in a separate depositional and faunal province (Wood & Smith, 1978), generally referred to as the Northern Province (Mortimore, 1983, Fig. 1). Many previous attempts to lithostratigraphically classify the Chalk of northern England tried to impose the traditional three-fold subdivision of Lower, Middle and Upper Chalk recognised in southern England (Jukes-Browne & Hill, 1903, 1904; Rawson et al., 1978). However, the key lithostratigraphical horizons that define the subdivisions of the Chalk in southern England are absent in northern England, and they cannot reliably be inferred biostratigraphically, because even where the same macrofossil zones occur in both areas, those in the north can only be approximately equated to those in the south (Wood & Smith, 1978).
In 1978, Wood & Smith proposed a new classification of the Chalk Group of Lincolnshire, Humberside and Yorkshire, based on the recognition of key marker beds (mostly flint and marl seams) that could be traced throughout the region. The different subdivisions were characterised by different distributions of flints and marl seams, and most of the formation boundaries coincided with topographical features that allowed the different subdivisions to be mapped where they were not obscured by younger strata (Wood & Smith, 1978). This new nomenclature was applied to the survey of the Kingston-upon-Hull and Brigg districts (Gaunt et al., 1992), and slightly modified and augmented by Whitham (1991, 1993).
The lithostratigraphical subdivision of the Chalk Group of Lincolnshire, Humberside and Yorkshire is as follows:
FORMATION | MEMBER |
Flamborough | Sewerby |
Danes Dyke | |
South Landing | |
Burnham | |
Welton | |
Feriby |
