The Chalk Group occurs in the southern, central and parts of the northern North Sea; north of 59º N there is a lateral passage into coeval strata that are mudstone dominated, and designated the Shetland Group (Johnson and Lott, 1993). There are contrasts in the stratigraphical nomenclature and subdivision of the Chalk Group in the Southern North Sea (Lott & Knox, 1994) and the Central and Northern North Sea (Johnson & Lott, 1993), and also between the UK and Norwegian sectors of the North Sea. The thickest parts of the Chalk Group, exceeding 1500 m, occur in Mesozoic rift structures (e.g. Central Graben), and the youngest interval is Paleocene in age, post-dating any onshore Chalk in the UK.
