Glasgow conurbation environmental issues include the impacts of land use change, including development and regeneration; contamination; soils; artificial ground; surface and groundwater; and offshore impacts. Also important are foundation conditions and engineering properties; flooding, extreme weather events, sea-level rise and how it relates to climate change; sustainable drainage (SuDS) etc. Potential resources in the Clyde basin include ground source heat energy (e.g. in thick superficial deposits) and other natural resources.
Our overall strategy, evolved historically in partnership with GCC and other BGS and NERC strategies is to develop near-surface 3D models and GIS datasets, including baseline surveys, to assess man’s impacts; contamination sources, pathways and receptors; land use and climate change impacts; the sustainable use of resources (including geothermal); ecosystem services; and sustainable drainage (SuDS).
We use integrated multidisciplinary, applied, whole-systems research geology, engineering, groundwater and geochemistry techniques and are engaged in knowledge exchange with decision makers. Our transdisciplinary partnerships maximise impact and relevance.
