Overview
The currently accepted standard biozonal scheme for the Chalk Group has evolved as a result of research carried out over the last hundred years or so. Some of the nomenclature used in previous biozonal schemes is different, and much of that which is also common to the current standard scheme was applied with different zonal concepts. Consequently, in order to understand historical biostratigraphical accounts of the Chalk Group, it is important to know how these historical schemes relate to the modern standard scheme.
Although there are many different historical accounts of Chalk Group biostratigraphy, most are based on a few key works, principally: Rowe (1900), Jukes-Browne & Hill (1903, 1904), Griffith & Brydone (1911), Brydone (1912) and Gaster (1924, 1927, 1929, 1932, 1937, 1941, 1944). The details of these schemes and how they relate to each other and to the modern standard scheme have been summarised (see: Comparison of previous biozonal concepts and nomenclature in the Chalk Group with the currently accepted macrofossil zonation)
Details of historical biozonal concepts used in the Chalk Group
The details of biozonal concepts used in key historical accounts of the Chalk Group are described with respect to each author or group of authors, and in ascending stratigraphical order. Alternatively, to find out about a particular biozonal concept by a particular author / group of authors see: Comparison of previous biozonal concepts and nomenclature in the Chalk Group with the currently accepted macrofossil zonation.
