Mortimore (1986a) introduced a lithostratigraphical scheme for the Chalk Group of Sussex, representing the first major refinement of Chalk Group lithostratigraphy in over 80 years. Subsequently there was modification of the original lithostratigraphical concepts and nomenclature (Mortimore & Pomerol, 1995), and these modifications were further added to and integrated with a more generally applicable scheme for southern England proposed by Bristow et al. (1997).
