The Fognam Marl occurs throughout the region, reaching a maximum thickness of 0.12 m. It equates with the Southerham Marl 2 of the Lewes Nodular Chalk Member in the Southern Region (Gale, 1996), and demonstrates that the Bottom Hardground Suite of Bromley & Gale's (1982) 'Chalk Rock Formation' represents a condensation of the greater part of the New Pit Chalk Member of the Southern Region.
