The Campanian stage was first defined by Coquand (1857) based on an area near Périgueux, SW France (Hancock & Gale, 1996).

Definition of base of stage

There is a general consensus that the extinction of the crinoid Marsupites testudinarius is a good marker for recognising the base of the Campanian, but this definition has yet to be formally accepted (Hancock & Gale, 1996).
