Geologists' Association Circular No. 122. p. 2-3.

Excursion to Arlesey and Letchworth. Saturday, July 9th, 1910. (Transcription from GA Circular No. 122. p. 2-3.)

THE PRESIDENT WILLIAM HILL, F.G.S.

EXCURSION SECRETARY MARK WILLS, 47, Upper Clapton Road, N.E.

Leave King's Cross by 1.45 p.m. train, due at Arlesey (Three Counties Station) at 04 p.m. To obtain cheap return tickets, 319 each, meet Mr. Wilks in local booking office not later than 1.30, or they can be obtained beforehand by writing to Mr. Wilts,

Walk to the brickworks of Messrs. Beart & Co.. where a deep excavation discloses a section in the upper part of the Gault, Cambridge Greensand and base of the Chalk Marl. The Cambridge Greensand is only visible for a short length on one side of the pit.

Proceed to the quarries of the Arlesey Cement Co. The one inspected by the members of the Association on their last visit is now abandoned, but a section is still visible in the upper part of the Chalk Marl, the Totternhoe Stone, and base of the Lower Chalk, though it is somewhat obscured by talus. Immediately to the south is a large pit in the upper part of the Chalk Marl. A few fossils may be secured here.

Walk to the Roman Camp, Wilbury Hill. There is a good view on the way covering the outcrop of the Cretaceous Series from the Lower Greenland to the main Chalk escarpment. A small exposure of the Melbourn Rock close by. The Director will draw attention to the features of the country and indicate the course of an old valley now filled with drift.

On the way to Letchworth (Garden City) a series of gravel pits will be visited. The gravel is believed by the Director to be the oldest in the district. If time permits there are two good exposures of the Middle Chalk, which could be examined (upper part of the zone of N. cuvieri and base of the Terebratulina Chalk).

Walking distance about 4 miles.

Tea will be arranged for at Letchworth.

Return train, Letchworth, 7.33, due at King's Cross 8,35 (the possibility of walking to Hitchin Station by the main road may be indicated, about to minutes more time than going to the Letchworth Station).
