Ashtead and Headley. Saturday, June 21th, 1916 (Transcription from: GA Circular No. 188. Session 1915-1916 p.3)
DIRECTOR: GEORGE W. YOUNG, F.G.S.
Outward train: Waterloo (L. & S.W.R.), 1.25 p.m., due Ashstead, 2.2 p.m. (Also from Clapham Junction, 1.22 p.m., changing at Wimbledon.)
Return train Leatherhead (L. & S.W.R.), 8.14, due Waterloo, 9.0.
Take single ticket to Ashtead.
Distance to be walked about 8 miles. Tea at Headley. Those who wish to shorten the walk may return from Boxhill (L.B. & S.C.R.) at 7.22 p.m., arriving at Victoria 8.40 p m.
From Ashtead Station walk south-east through Ashtead Park to Bishop's Chalk Pit at corner of Headley Road, where the zones of Marsupites and Micraster cor-anguinum are seen. Ascend the hill, passing an old shallow pit which has yielded Uintacrinus, to the Ermyn Street (Roman Road).
Near Headley Court, in Clay Lane, is an old pit cut in Marsupites-zoue. Close by is the well-known Tertiary outlier of Oyster Hill, where Ostræa bellavacina can usually be found.
After tea walk to the gravel pits on Headley Heath, and then across the Heath to High Ashurst, whence descend to the valley leading into the main valley of the Mole at Juniper Hall. Compare this valley with Polesden Valley on west side of the Mole.
On reaching main road turn northward through the Gorge of the Mole to Leatherhead, passing through Mickleham village and Norbury Park, noting disappearance of the stream. In summer the river bed is usually dry in Norbury Park, but it re-appears at Thorneombe.
