Excursion to Berkhamsted and Little Heath, in conjunction with the Herts Natural History Society). Saturday, April 26th, 1919 (Transcribed from: GA Circular No. 216. Session 1919-1920. p.8

Directors, C. J. GILBERT, F.G.S., and G. BARROW, F.G.S.

Excursion Secretary, T. W. READER, 17, Gloucester Road, Finsbury Park, N.

Train from Euston, 1.40, arriving Berkhamsted, 2.42.

Return train, 7.12, arriving Oxford Circus, 8.36; or 7.44, arriving Euston, 9.20. Return fare, 6/3.

The primary object of this Excursion is to inspect sections in the extensive deposits of High Level sands and gravels at Little Heath, near Berkhamsted. These beds are at an altitude of .550 feet, and rest directly upon the chalk. They were described by Mr. GILBERT in a paper read before the Geological Society of London on 22nd January, 1919, and were claimed by Mr. BARROW, in a supplementary paper read. at the same time, to be correlated with the High Plateau gravels at lower altitudes further south, and with similar deposits south of the Thames.

They are well developed in a pit on Little Heath Common, where the Loamy Sands (containing frequent exampled of suncracks and ripple markings)' rest upon a rolling surface of gravels, and are in turn capped, and highly disturbed by glacial beds. The junction of the gravel beds with the chalk is seen in an adjacent pit. The route is via White Hill and Gravel Path (where sections of chalk rock and clay with flints, are found in the road cuttings), and through Gutteridge Wood to Little Heath Common. Distance, 5 miles.

Tea (1/- each) will be arranged for.
