Excursion to Bickley and Chiselhurst. Saturday, July 11th, 1914 (Transcription from GA Circular No. 168. Session 1913-1914. p.7-8)

In order to obtain special ticket; (1s. 4d.), meet Dr. Todd-White in the booking-office not later than 12.50. Leave St. Paul's (S E. & C.R.) 1.6 p.m., reaching Bromley South 1.40.

Walk from the station to Peill's Pit ; the section here shows London Clay 1 ft. to 18 ft., Basement Bed 3 ft., overlying the Blackheath and Oldhaven Beds, which consist of two members, the upper part alternating beds of clay and sand 24 ft. thick, the lower Pebble Beds seen to a depth of 38 ft.

During the walk to Elmstead the general structure of the district will be pointed out. At Elmstead examine the famous "Rock Pit," by kind permission of Mr. Harrison, in whose garden it is situated. The Blackheath Beds here consist of about80ft. of sand and pebbles, of which 20 ft, is exposed in the pit. Fossils are numerous, many species having been recorded. The shells are easily extracted, but very fragile.

Walk to the Bickley Hotel, in the grounds of which are the Chislehurst Caves.—"These are cut in the chalk and there are several miles of galleries, parts of which will be inspected under the leadership of the Hotel Guide. Tea will be taken here. A charge of 1s. 3d. covers the admission to the caves and plain tea; eggs extra.

Return train Chislehurst 7.27. London Bridge 7.45.

Total walking distance about 4 miles.

Sections at Piell's Pit and Elmstead are worth photogiaphing.
