Geologists' Association Circular No. 145. Session 1911–1912. p.6-7

Excursion to Borstal and Burnam. Saturday, June 22nd, 1912. (Transcription from GA Circular No. 145. Session 1911–1912. p.6-7.)

DIRECTOR: G. E. DIBLEY, F,G.S.

EXCURSION SECRETARY: MARK WILKS, 47, Upper Clapton Road, N.H.

Meet Mr. Wilks in Booking Office not later than 9 o'clock. Train leaves Holborn 9.15, due Chatham 10.16. Return fare, 3s. 9d. Bring lunch. Proceed by tram to Borstal and visit Borstal Manor Quarry. This pit, though visited in 1909, is worthy of a special visit, as within the last year the Director has obtained an interesting fauna from the Heteroceras raissianum sub-zone (Chalk Rock) which was not Previously known to have existed in Kent. Leaving Borstal the party will walk through Wouldham, passing a large quarry, now unworked, in the R. cuvieri, T. gracilis zones. At the end of the village turn to the left and ascend the hill and enter the extensive quarries known locally as 'Peter's Pits,' with excavations in (1) R. cuvieri; A. plena marl; (2) H. subglobosus; and (3) Schloenbachia varians zones. This latter has been opened since the Association last visited this quarry. Lunch will he taken at this spot. From here proceed to large workings in the S. varians zone at an adjoining quarry, locally known as 'Mill Bay,' and not hitherto described in the Director's paper.

This pit is also especially interesting as the quarrying has been carried on chiefly in the zone of S. varians, and has yielded a rich fauna to the Director.

Members will have time to search for fossils.

Among the Brachiopods Terebratula, Rhynchonella, and Kingena occur plentifully. The Lamellibranchs include Pecten orbicularis, Lima globosa, Plicatula inflata.

Casts of Gasteropods are also met with. The existence of to large an exposure of this zone reveals the dip of the beds which are here immediately followed in the outcrop by the Gault, Folkestone Sands and Hythe Beds of the Lower Greensand through which the Medway has out its channel.

Meat Tea at the Post Office, Barham, price 1s. 3d.

After tea the members will visit fresh excavations in the drift, capping pits in the S. varians zone, and which contain interesting erratics, and then climb Blue Bell Hill by the path which skirts the three large quarries, which form an important feature in the landscape; these extend from the S. varians sone to the base of the Micraster cor-tesitudinarium.

Magnificent views are obtained from the summit. At the Upper Bell the members will return to Chatham by trap, fare about 9d. Total walking distance 6 miles.

Train leaves Chatham 9.1, due at Holborn 10 p.m.
