Excursion to Bracknell, Saturday, April 8th, 1911. (Transcription from GA Circular No. 131. Session 1910–1911. p.3-4.)

DIRECTOR: HENRY DEWEY, F.G.S.

EXCURSION SECRETARY: DOUGLAS LEIGHTON, 108, St. Julian's Farm Road, West Norwood, S.E.

Leave Waterloo (North) Station by the 1.10 train, due at Bracknell at 2.25. Meet Mr. Leighton under the clock not later than 12.55. Special return fare 3s. 1d.

Walk from the station to the pit of the Down Mill Brick Company. This pit is dug in the top part of the London Clay, which here contains many large septarian nodules. These nodules are full of fossils, and collectors should bring good-sized hammers to break the septaria open. Among other forms the following are common: Ditrupa plana (J. Sow.), Vermicularis bognoriensis,"Mant," Modiola elegans (J. Sow.), Modiola simplex (J. C. Sow.), Meretrix tenuistriata, Protocardium plumsteadianum (J. Sow.), Pteria media (J. Sow.), Solidua (Actaoeon) simulata, "Sol.," Cassis nodosa,"Sol.," Natica labellata," Lam.," Pyrula smithi, "J. C. Sow.," Pisania labiata; (J. C. Sow.), Nautilus.

The proprietor, Mr. E. J. Benthall, has kindly offered to conduct the party round the works and explain the method of manufactnre of the bricks; viewing the steam-drying sheds, the continuous kilns, etc.

Proceed to Down Mill Pits to the pit owned by the Binfield Brick and Tile Company, where the following additional fossils are found: Pyrula angulata, "J. C. Sow.," Rostellaria lucida, Sow., Cassis ambigua Sow., Fenestella, Nipa (rare), Pinna affinis, and the large Arctica (Cypriana) scutellaria (Lam.).

Afterwards return to Bracknell and walk to Bill Hill to examine sections of Lower Bagshot Sands, capped by remains of the Bracklesham Beds.

Dr. A. Irving noted the occurrence in this sand pit of two small faults. From the top of the hill a fine view of the plateau (Easthampstead Plain), capped by thick beds of sandy gravel, is obtained. These gravels rest on the yellow sands of Lower Barton age, and are separated from the Bagshot Sands by about 40 feet of glauconitic looms and sands, called by Dr. Irving the "green earth series." These glauconitic sands are exposed in the railway between Sunningdale and Ascot Stations, and can be seen from the train.

The party will return to Bracknell for tea at the New Inn (plain tea, 1s., with eggs, 1s. 6d.).

Total walking distance about 4 miles.

Return by 8.10 train from Bracknell, due at Waterloo 9.29.

Bring collecting bags and cameras.
