Geologists' Association Circular No. 144. Session 1911–1912. p.3-4

Excursion to Chiltern Hills, from Princes Risborough to Wendover. Saturday, May 18th, 1912. (Transcription from GA Circular No. 144. Session 1911–1912. p.3-4.)

DIRECTOR: R. W. POCOCK, B.SC., F.G.S.

EXCURSION SECRETARY: Miss EADMORE, 4, Ulundi Road, Blackheath, S.E.

To obtain cheap return tickets, 3s. 6d. each, meet Miss Cadmore in the Booking Office not later than 12 o'clock.

Leave Marylebone 12.53 p.m. by train due at Princes Risborough 1.6 p.m.

Ascend the escarpment of the Chiltern Hills, noting on the way, first a small pit in the zone of Terebratula gracilis, then, a little farther up the hillside, another pit will be seen in the zone of Holaster planus, which also shows the Chalk Rock. Pits in the zone of Micraster cor-testudinarium will also be visited; one of the latter shows nodular and tabular flint bands and "clay-with-flints" piped into the chalk.

Walk to the summit of Whiteleaf Hill and examine the cross incised in the steep western slope of the hill. The view from this point is very beautiful and extensive.

Follow a winding path, through beechwoods, to Longdown and thence round the flank of Pulpit Hill (an outlier of Upper Chalk on Chalk Rock) through some of the most beautiful scenery of the Chilterns, to Ellesborough, passing Beacon Hill capped by Chalk Rock.

If time permit Coombe Hill (832 ft. above O. D.) will then be ascended, whence a fine view can be obtained across the Vale of Aylesbury, and the walk will becontinued along the top of Bacombe Hill and down to Wendover, passing a pit in chalk of Rhynchonella.

If time is short the road will be followed from Ellesborough to Wendover. Tea at Wendover.

Total walking distance 7½ miles.

Train leaves Wendover 6.31 p.m., due at Baker Street 8.9 p.m.
