DIRECTOR: G. BARROW, F.G.S., M.I.M.M.
EXCURSION SECRETARY: T. W. READER, F.G.S., 17, Gloucester Road, Finsbury Park, N.
Outward train: Baker Street.1.5 p.m; Chesham, 2.20.
Return train Chesham, 7.54 p.m, ; Baker Street, 8.47.
Return fare, 2s. 4d. Tea the Crown Hotel, Chesham about 6.30 p.m.
The party will walk by the south road, via Hill Farm, to the Cowcroft Brick field, about 2 miles, and return by the north road, via Botley. The main object of the excursion is to re-visit the brick-pit and see what further light is thrown on the movements in the superficial beds that here overlie the Reading Beds. (See Monthly Circular for July, No. 179, Session 1914–1915. Also Proceedings, 1915, pp. 330-140.)
En route the party will pass over two chalk hills separated by a small hollow. On the first there is no Tertiary outlier, and the superficial deposit capping the bill is "Clay with Flints." A number of broken up blocks of Hertfordshire Puddingstone will be noted on and about the road. After crossing the hollow, on approaching the outlier of Tertiary Beds it will be seen that the Chalk is covered by clay with Reading pebbles, as is almost always the case.
The party will proceed straight to the brick-pit, and after examining this will visit as many of the openings as time will allow. The two most interesting are (1) a small opening, on the north side of the bill, showing the bed immediately above the Chalk, which is highly glauconitic, and contains fish teeth ; (2) the pit on the south-west side of the hill, showing the basement bed of the London Clay, pebbly and with numerous fossils in hard lenticular patches.
