Leave Paddington 9.0 a.m.; arrive Uffington 11.23 a.m. To obtain cheap return tickets, 7s. 5d., meet Mr. Reader in main line booking office not later than 8.45 a.m. These tickets are available for return up to May 26th. Members who desire to stay for the week-end should apply to the Director for information as to hotel accommodation.
Members should bring lunch. There is an inn at Uffington Station, but no other until Faringdon is reached.
Visit the large pit in Lower Gault on the south side of the railway, then return and walk north-westward across the valley of the Ock to Fernham village. Ascend the hill of Lower Greensand to Cole's Pits, a series of old workings in the Ironsands, formerly supposed to be the pit-dwellings of an ancient British village.
Continue northward to Faringdon Pit in the Red Gravel. Cross the Allotment Field to Coxwell Pit in the Sponge Gravel. Time will be allowed for collecting in both pits, and if possible other sections of the Gravel will be visited. This deposit, which is of Aptian age, is remarkable for the great number of beautifully preserved contemporaneous fossils it contains, especially the sponges, bryozoa, echinoderms, teeth and bones of reptiles and fishes, besides many others derived from the Corallian and Kimeridge Clay.
There are other features of both geological and physiographical interest to be seen during the walk, and, if the weather is clear, several views worth photographing, especially of the White Horse Hill.
Tea at Faringdon at 5 o'clock at the White Hart. Meat tea, 1s. 6d. each. Total walking distance 4 miles.
Return train leaves Faringdon 5.55 p.m.; due Paddington 8.30 (via Swindon).
