Geologists' Association Circular No. 120. Session 1909–1910. p.3[edit]

Excursion to Gomshall. Saturday, June 11th, 1910. (Transcription from GA Circular No. 120. Session 1909–1910. p.3.)[edit]

DIRECTOR: DOUGLAS LEIGHTON.

EXCURSION SECRETARY: Miss JOHNSTON, Hazelwood, Wimbledon Hill.

Leave Cannon Street, 1.2. Cheap fares, 3s. Meet Excursion Secretary under the clock not later than 12.45.

Arrive at Gomshall Station at 2.30.

Walk westwards towards the Crossways, Bargate Stone being seen in Paddington Mill Lane, and also just before Crossways Farm in the road bank. Turn southwards along, Raikes Lane to Raikes Hollow. Here there is a very fine, clear section of Bargate Stone Beds and Hythe Beds, the junction being clearly seen at 440 O.D. Thence proceed through Sutton to Hoe Lane and Peaslake. Several sections will be seen about here which show that the Peaslake valley runs in a denuded anticline, and also that there is a fault in the East side of the valley which brings the Bargate Stone down against the Lower Sands (Hythe Beds). In Purser's Hollow a junction of the Bargate and Hythe Beds, here marked by as pebble bed, will be seen. Proceed through Burehet's Hollow and Jesse's Lane—good exposures of Chert Beds being seen in both these places—to Lee Hollow. Bargate Stone of the ordinary type is seen at the south end of the lane; a short way up, however, the beds assume an abnormal character. The stone beds are cherry in appearance, and in some parts are very similar to the cherts of the Hythe Beds. At Burrow's Cross, see two sections in Upper Pebbly Sands (Folkestone Beds). Return to Gomshall via Burrow's Lane. Tea at the Black Horse, 1s.; with eggs, 1s. 3d.

Walking distance, 5 to 6 miles.

Return train, Gomshall, 8.5; Cannon Street, 9.35.
