Leave Charing. Cross 2.7 (or Cannon Street 2.6, changing at Dartford). Arrive Greenhithe 3.8.

Return train, Greenhithe 7.2, arrive Charing-Cross, 8.19. Return fare. 4/3.

From Greenhithe Station, walk south to London Road, Stone Castle Drive, Swansfield. Lodge, noting long chalk sections, then north to pits (Thames Sand Dredging Co.), opened Dartford Heath Gravels. The small crater pit shows loams inter-digitating. with sandy gravels. The Howe Hill Pit shows clean sharp sand and gravel, current bedded, the highest part trenched by superficial loam-filled channels. The coarse debris includes Eocene fossiliferous ironstones, hard ironstones containing quartz grit, with a siliceous deposit in cavities, heavy flints resulting from accumulation of secondary silica, enveloping nodular flints, and a (?) basaltic boulder.

Continue west along London Road to Martin's Pit. At the Tollgate Pit ( Scott and Branton's) note much Lower Greensand. material. At Hillhouse Pit, Jurassic Belemnites and have been found. Between Horns Cross and the Mental Hospital, dry valleys deeply carve the 100 ft. Terrace. Proceed along Cotton Lane to Stone Court Chalk Pits, the chalk is piped and overlaid by Thanet Sand and Dartford Heath Gravel successively. Along Stone Court private railway, section throngh drift-filled channel, continuation of dry valley. Festooning suggesting, Coombe Rock. Cross Stone Marshes (alluvium) to Thames Wall. Return to Greenhithe for tea at H. Barnes' Avenue Tea Rooms.
