Excursion to Guildford, Compton, and Godalming. Saturday, July 1st, 1911. (Transcription from GA Circular No. 135. Session 1910–1911. p.2-4.)

DIRECTORS: GEORGE W. YOUNG AND DOUGLAS LEIGHTON.

EXCURSION SECRETARY: A. H. WILLIAMS, 385, Holloway Road, N.

Train leaves Waterloo 11.8 a.m., due Guildford 12.7. To obtain cheap tickets (3s. 2d. return), meet Mr. Williams by main has booking office, not later than 10.30. Bring lunch.

The Pottery seen just before reaching Guildford is worked in Tertiary Clay, beyond which the narrow Chalk ridge of the Hog's Back rises steeply. Walk by the towing path through the gorge of the River. Wey and climb up the steep river cliff of

Folkestone Sand crowned by St. Catherine's Chapel. After a brief examination of the section, walk westward by Pickards Rough, along the escarpment of the Bargate Stone overlooking the Peasemarsh inlier of Weald Clay, to a quarry in Bargate Stone near Orange Grove. Here Mr. Leighton will fully discuss the local divisions of the Lower Greensand and compare this section with that at Hollowfield Cottage (described by Meyer in his paper), which will be visited next. The former shows the Bargate Stone arid calcareous sand of the usual type. The pebbles are large and numerous and at times the stone is almost a conglomerate. The Hollowfield Cottage section is on a somewhat lower horizon and shows the junction of the Bargate Stone and the underlying sands, the Cherts here being absent.

Follow footpath through Lonely Park. Near the lake a good view of the 16th century mansion is obtainable. Thence to Compton by Sandy Lane (the old Pilgrims Way) which runs parallel to the Hog's Back. Note the extremely narrow outcrop: of Gault. The late G. F. Watts' Artistic Pottery, Picture Gallery and Memorial Chapel will be passed en route, but as they were visited by the Association in 1909 no stop will be made on this occasion. Lunch at Compton.

Walk southward through Eastbury Park to Kiln Copse, where an interesting section shows a junction of the Bargate Stone and Cherts. The junction is very sharp, the transition from the calcareous to the non-calcareous beds being completed within 18 inches. The pebbles in this section are comparatively large, any of them being portions of Jurassic ammonites, etc.

For the next mile the route traverses the Bargate Stone plateau to a section near Northbrook Place.

This shows a somewhat different fades of the Bargate Stone, which is here found in more or less lenticular masses instead of in fairly continuous bands, as in the former sections.

From Hurtmore Farm the path drops steeply to Hurtmore Cottage, down one of the numerous deeply-incised dry gorges which notch the edge of the Bargate Stone plateau and give to the scenery around Godalming its picturesque character. Follow the River Wey to Godalming, noting its extremely sinuous course. At Godalming, tea will be taken at the "White Hart." Price 1/- and upwards. After tea ascend Holloway Hill, where a very large section in the Bargate Stone can be seen. Then re-cross River Wey and ascend Frith Hill, where a fine road section shows some 30 or 40 ft. of Bargate Stone. The face of the section has been not back cleanly and is quite clear, the characteristic current bedding being beautifully displayed.

Frith Hill is a narrow projecting headland of the Bargate Stone plateau, and from its summit extensive views are obtained. Here a final summary of the stratigraphy will be given.

Photographers should bring their cameras.

Return from Farncombe Station at 7.47 p.m. Take single tickets to Guildford (2½d.), where change. Leave Guildford 8.19, due at Waterloo 9.6 p.m.

Total walking distance about 8 miles.
