Excursion to Hindhead. July 4th, 1914. (Transcription from: GA Circular No. 168. Session 1913-1914. p.7)

DIRECTOR: DOUGLAS LEIGHTON, F.G.S.

EXCURSION SECRETARY: E. C. MARTIN Hatfield, Lower Park Road, Lorton, Essex.

Meet Mr. Martin in the booking-hall, Waterloo Station, not. later than 9.55 a.m. to obtain special tickets, price 4s. 7d. Train leaves at 10,10 a.m,, and arrives at Witley at 11.46 a.m. Bring lunch.

The object of this excursion will be to study the lower portion of the Lower Greensand, as developed in the Hindhead district, and also to discuss some interesting physical problems of the area.

From Witley proceed to Sandhills, where, passing up from the Atherfieid Clay, a section in the lower ferruginous sands will be seen. Above this, in the road and in an old quarry, massive sandstone with poor chert comes in. The sections may be compared with those seen at Pitch Hill on June 6th, Turning southwards again towards Brookstreet, indications of a similar section are seen in the lane-side. At Brookstreet a large pit in the Atherfield Cray will be visited. The clay is very sandy here, and contains the usual nodules, but which have not, so far, yielded any fossils. A search should be made. Lunch here, From Brookstreet walk two miles across the Weald Clay to Boundless Farm, where there is a small section in Atherfield Clay. Climb up through Boundless Copse to Gibbet Hill. This, the highest portion of Hindhead, is 895 feet above O.D., and, if clear, a splendid view over the Weald can be obtained. 'Walking down to the road, the Devil's Punch Bowl will be seen, and the on of this truly magnificent combe be can be discussed. It will be suggested that it is a grand example of spring erosion. Tea will be taken at Mr. Rollason's, the Post Office, Hindhead, price 1s. 2d. After tea walk down, partly by footpath, to Haslemere.

Return train leaves liaslemere at 6.52 p.m., arriving at Waterloo at 8.3 p.m.

Walking distance 8 or 9 miles.
