Geologists' Association Circular No. 190. Session 1915-1916 p.2-3[edit]

Netley Heath, Newlands Corner, and the Silent Pool. Saturday, September 23rd, 1916 (Transcribed from: GA Circular No. 190. Session 1915-1916 p.2-3)[edit]

DIRECTOR: G. M. DAVIES, B. Sc.,

EXCURSION SECRETARY: A. H. WILLIAMS, F.G.S., "Woodbine," Torrington Park, North Finchley, N.

Outward train, London Bridge (S. E. & C. R.), 9.35 a.m. ; Gomshall, 11.6.

Return train: Gomshall, 7.6 p. m. ; Cannon Street, 8.42.

Lunch should be carried. Tea at the Silent Pool about 5 p.m. The walking distance is 8½ miles, mostly by grassy tracks.

[The Excursion Secretary will leave Cannon Street at 11.4 a.m. and follow the route Gomshall, Netley Heath, Newland's Corner, to Silent Pool. Mr, G. W. Young will leave Waterloo 12.40 p.m., and proceed from Clandon to Newland's Corner and Silent Pool.]

At. Gomshall station a face of Folkestone and is capped by a narrow channel filled with gravel of the Tillingbourne.

Ascend the Chalk escarpment, noticing Upper Green sand and Lower Chalk exposed in Colekitchen Lane, and proceed northward to NetIey Heath. The first sections to be visited here are in gravelly clay-with-flints, containing Lower Greensand chert and ironstone and Pliocene (?) ironstone. Farther north are seen the pits in supposed Pliocene sand, which have been visited several times by the Association.

Proceed south-west and west to Newlands Corner, a noted view-point on the Chalk escarpment. Here typical sedentary clay-with-flints is seen, associated with sand, pebbles, and partly rolled flints arid Greensand material.

Descend the escarpment to Weston Wood, Albury, where a small brickfield shows Gault and Folkestone Sand, with chalky drift and sarsens.

The Silent Pool, a short distance eastward, is fed by a strong spring from the base of the Chalk. After tea at the Cottage here, the. return to Gomshall will be made through Albury Park and Shere.
