Leave Marylebone, Great Central, at 2.15; arrive Northwood 2.42. Special return fare 1s. 3d. Meet Excursion Secretary in hall near hooking office, not later than 2.0 o'clock.

Walk one mile to Golf Club grounds by field path parallel with railway on the up side.

The laying opt of the grounds and the making of Links for the new Golf Club has afforded an exceptionally favourable opportunity for examining some good exposures of the Reading Series. The sections and openings include Reading marl, sand and pebbles.

The following may be mentioned as the more important exposures:

(1) Reading Marl. About 6 feet of this overlies the fine Reading sand of the area. Decomposed pale brown and greyish most is shown in an opening overlaid with about II feet of wash; and the recent draining of an old pond has exposed blood-red marl in situ close to the surface.

(2) Reading Sand. There are a number of exposures of fine pale sand. Two of these are deep openings showing in section 12 to 13 feet of sand with characteristic green bands and evidently in situ. In addition there are at one part of the course five openings in the sand in close proximity within a few yards.

(3) Sand and Pebbles. An interesting section, now somewhat obscured, shows Reading sand capped with pebbles; but whilst the sand below is in situ, the pebbles above appear to have been moved. The pebbles are on one (the right) side only. Towards the left side of the opening the matrix of the pebbles was seen to become more clayey, and then clay replaced the pebbles above the sand. Parallel green layers in the pale sand showed this to be undisturbed. Another good section shows fine pale sand with green bands, containing rather large flint pebbles, embedded in a greenish matrix. Both the pebbles and the sand below are in situ. Above the bed of pebbles the usually parallel greenish bands become brown and are folded and crumpled, suggestive of the upper part of the sand having been squeezed slightly,

(4) Reading Pebbles. A large pit, which has been dug for gravel, shows a thick bed of pebbles in a sandy matrix. Both the pebbles and their matrix are undoubtedly Reading material;, but whether any part of the pebble-bed is in situ, will be an interesting point for examination and disciussion. In one part of the bed the pebbles have a greenish, sandy matrix; in ocher parts the matrix varies in colour and is more clayey. Also there are indications of some parts of the beds having been churned up, and the cause of this will be discussed. The superficial deposits of the area consist almost entirely of Tertiary material, and appear to have been mainly derived from Reading beds.

The Managing Director, Mr. J. F. Markes, will give his help, and will exhibit some Roman pottery and some old horse-shoes, etc., found during the progress of the work. Tea will be arranged at the new Golf House. Walk back to Northwood, and return by train leaving at 7.2; due Marylebone 7.28.
