Geologists' Association Circular No. 120. p. 2-3.

Excursion to Sundridge and French Street. Saturday, June, 4th, 1910. (Transcription from GA Circular No. 120. p. 2-3.)

DIRECTORS: P. A. B. MARTIN and Ll. TREACHER, F.G.S. EXCURSION SECRETARY: A. H. WILLIAMS, 385, Holloway Road, London, N.

Leave Cannon Street, 1t.43; due Westerham, 12.48. Meet Secretary under clock 11.25 to obtain special return tickets, 2s.

The main object of this excursion is to examine the valleys of two small streams, tributary to the Darent, which flow down the dip-slope of the Lower Greensand. On leaving the station take the footpath on the left, across the meadows east of the church. Then ascend nosey Hill by the road to near the school. Turn to the left towards French Street, passing many shell pits. A short halt will be made in the woods for lunch. Near the burial ground at French Street a view of the first, or Valence, valley may be had, especially of the gorge cut by the stream through the outcrop of the chert beds along a line of fault. The higher part of the valley, in the "rag" and Atherfield Clay area, is broader, and expands to the wind-gap in the escarpment. The complementary anti-dip stream was crossed last May at Puddledock, whence it flows into the Medway (see report of Brasted excursion, reference below).

Follow the new carriage drive to the lodge of Weardale Manor and the footpath past the gardens and through the woods to "The Knoll," which overlooks the Weald at 800 ft. O.D. Thence to the large chert quarry at the top of Toys' Hill. Cross the road to the kissing gate entrance to the "Permissive Path" and follow this and other tracks to "Emmets." Near the eastern lodge of the park is the water-parting at the present head of the second, or Dry Hill, valley. Several small springs rise here, thrown out by the Atherfield and Weald Clays. Walk a few yards down the road northward to a field-gate leading to Great Notman Street Farm. (Milk may be obtained here.) Then by lanes to Brook Place, from which place take the foot. path northward across a grass field and through copes, etc., to Manor Farm. Continue by lanes to Dry Hill, where there is a section showing the centre of an anticlinal ridge which extends from here westwards to Westerham. Return a short distance and take the footpath along she top of this ridge to the Warren, passing a small outlier of Folkestone Beds copped by gravel of the main Darent valley. Thence past Sundridge Church to the cross-roads in the village.

Tea at the Old Club Room, Sundridge. (if with meat, 1s. 9d. each.) After tea walk to Chevening Halt, 1¼ mile, from which the return train leaves at 7.43, due at Cannon Street, 8.44.

Total walking distance, eight miles.
