Geologists' Association Circular No. 217. Session 1919-1920. p.2-3[edit]

Excursion to Virginia Water, and Woking. Saturday, May 3rd, 1919 (Transcribed from: GA Circular No. 217. Session 1919-1920. p.2-3)[edit]

Director, C N. BROMEHEAD, F.G.S., F.R.G.S.

Excursion Secretary, T. W. READER, 17, Gloucester Road, Finsbury Park, N.

Leave Waterloo Station (L. & S. W. R.) by 1.40 train to Virginia Water (via Staines), arriving 2.31. Single fare, 2/6.

From the Station, walk to Lyne Grove, across the present and the former course of the Bourne. The latter was abandoned owing to diversion of the stream by the Thames. At Lyne Grove, visit a small pit in the Boyn Gravels of the Bourne, showing. also traces of the underlying Bracklesham Clays, from which fossils have been extracted. The interesting topographical features will be explained. From Lyne Grove, walk through the woods, by permission of Mr. Godfrey Isaacs, to Hersham Farm, and thence by public roads to Stanners Hill. A large pit here shows the pebble bed at the base of the Barton Beds. The presence of chert and small white quartz indicates that the denudation of the Weald had now uncovered the Lower Greensand: this section should be photographed. A smaller pit shows traces of the glauconite beds of the upper Bracklesham.

Walk by field. paths to Horsell Common, where a section in current-bedded Bagshot Sand will be visited, if time permits. Thence to Woking, where tea will be taken at Pitcher's Restaurant.

Walking distance, 7½ miles.

Return train, Woking, 7.3. Waterloo, 8.7. Fare, 3/-
