The highest beds shown are interbedded mudstones, siltstones and sandstones, the latter being more resistant and predominantly lenticular. Abundant Euestheria (Crustacea) occur on the underside of some sandstones. The lower group of beds are predominantly mudstone, with fine sandstone and siltstone layers, lenses and laminae. Burrows are common. At the base of the Arden Sandstone, immediately overlying the red mudstone, a thin paler bed can be seen consisting of hard siltstone/silty mudstone which is persistent over a wide area. The Arden Sandstone Member is of Triassic age and belongs to the Mercia Mudstone Group. It is well known for its relatively diverse flora and fauna with plant remains, bivalves, crustacea, vertebrates and trace fossils all recorded. This biota reflects terrestrial and subaqueous environments in an arid area.
