Looking south-east at the working face of quarry in Woburn Sands (Lower Cretaceous). Pratts Quarry, Joseph Arnold and Sons Ltd., Leighton Buzzard. This quarry south of Leighton Buzzard exploits the 'Red Sands' at the top of the Woburn Sands sequence. Up to 8 m. of medium- to coarse-grained, slightly pebbly sands are extracted below Gault overburden. Concentrations of dark clay and goethite ooliths on the foreset pick out cross-bedding typical of sand waves in shallow tidal seas. The scraper above the face is removing Gault overburden. The sands are medium to coarse-grained, with a proportion of small pebbles (up to 5 mm.) and brown grains of limonite. The strong cross-bedding seen in the photograph is typical of sand-wave environments in shallow shelf seas. The sand is sold mainly for concreting.
