Summary

description {{|1=Specimen of slate from Craiglea Quarry, Logiealmond Lodge, Perthshire, Scotland. Both green and purple slate were quarried at Logiealmond, typical of the variable colour of the Highland Border Slate Belt. The specimen is of Precambrian, Dalradian age. British Geological Survey Petrology Collection sample number EMC 1508. Slate quarries in the Logiealmond hills range from small pits to large workings. Craiglea Quarry was the largest, and by 1794 it produced 500,000 slates per year, sold at a price of 13/4 (thirteen shillings and fourpence) per thousand. By 1837 production had increased to 1,200,000 and the slates were said to be of superior quality. The quarries at Logiealmond ceased operation at the beginning of World War 1. Specimen size: 14x11cm.
