Summary

A fossil specimen of Kilbuchophyllia clarksoni Scrutton. A fossil coral. (Coelenterata, Anthozoa, Zoantharia.) Wandel Burn at Wallace's Cast 2.75 miles north-east of Abington, Lanarkshire, Scotland. This specimen of Kilbuchophyllia clarksoni is a coral from the Ordovician Lower Carodoc rocks and was found at Wandel Burn at Wallace's Cast 2.75 miles north-east of Abington. British Geological Survey Biostratigraphy Collection number GSE 9935. Holotype. The Ordovician saw a huge expansion within the animal kingdom, trilobites, graptolites brachiopods, gastropods, bryozoans, crinoids and corals. Of the latter, the Tabulata were all colonial and the Rugosa were dominated by solitary forms such as Kilbuchophyllia. The soft-bodied animal of the rugose coral was known as a polyp and would have sat in the hollow called a calice at the top of the corallum (skeleton), the latter was formed by the polyp removing calcium carbonate from the sea-water. Figd. Clarkson, Harper, Owen & Taylor, 1992, Terra Nova 4, fig. 4a, p.249; Scrutton, 1994, Cour. Forsch-lnst. Senckenberg, 154, p.157, figs. 3-5.
