Summary

description
English: Figure 1 The Iapetus Ocean flanked by Laurentia–Greenland and Baltica, with the separate microcontinent of Avalonia (Newfoundland–Nova Scotia– England–northwest continental Europe) that had possibly separated from Gondwana, now with a Rheic Ocean between it and Armorica (northwest France–Central Germany), which is about to separate from Gondwana. Scotland, on the other hand, was located marginal to Laurentia–Greenland. Eastern Avalonia united with the southern margin of Baltica by the latest Ordovician, when the intervening Tornquist Sea closed. Note that most of the Iapetus Ocean and flanking continents were south of the Equator at this time. Based mostly on Scotese & McKerrow (1990) and Torsvik et al. (1996).
