Topography (land surface elevation) of Africa
A new map showing the topography (land surface elevation) of Africa; country boundaries and the location of capital cities was derived for this Atlas by combining three separate open source datasets from three third party providers. Maps for each country were clipped from this new Africa-wide and can be seen on each country page.
Data sources
USGS GTOPO30
A digital elevation model (DEM) of Africa was derived from the US Geological Survey (USGS) Global 30 Arc-Second Elevation dataset (GTOPO30), which is available to download from the US Geological Survey.
GADM Global Administrative areas
Administrative country boundaries in the Atlas are derived from the GADM database of global administrative areas (version 2.0), which is available to download from GADM.
UN Revision of World Urbanization Prospects
The locations of capital cities for this map were derived from the 2011 Revision of World Urbanization Prospects, provided by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (Population Division, Population Estimates and Projections Section). This is available to download through the Geocommons website.
