Carboniferous

Limestone of Carboniferous age underlies the main part of the region and forms the basement in the Egbury 1 Borehole mentioned in Figure 4. The Carboniferous Limestone Supergroup is likely to underlie the main part of the Andover district directly below Triassic and Permian strata overlying the Variscan unconformity or beneath intervening Silesian strata. The limestone in this borehole is found to be white-cream or blue-grey crystalline, fossiliferous, occasionally argillaceous, slightly dolomitic and highly fractured in places.
