After more than 400 years of Portuguese colonisation, Mozambique gained independence in 1975, but endured a civil war from 1977 to 1992. After the end of the war and the first multi-party elections in 1994, Mozambique saw major changes, including the return by 1995 of over 1.7 million Mozambiquan refugees from neighbouring countries and the return home of an additional 4 million internally displaced persons. Significant economic recovery and growth has been interrupted by infrastructure damage due to flooding, especially in 2000, and by further periodic civil unrest since 2013.
