Ward was educated at the Royal School of Mines, which was associated with the Geological Survey and shared the same offices in Jermyn Street, London . He joined the Survey in 1865 as one of the team that Murchison put in place working alongside Green, Aveline, Dakyns and Russell on the Yorkshire coalfield until 1869. Subsequently, he moved to the Lake District where he surveyed until his retirement in 1878. His final work was as a church curate in Keswick, becoming the vicar of Rydal in 1880, unfortunately he died soon after. Many of his field sketches illustrate the 2nd edition of the Harrogate memoir published in 1908 (Table 1 and Figure 13)
