The following is a list of some large groundwater projects in Namibia.

Note: this is not a comprehensive list of groundwater projects: there are many more. If you have information on other significant groundwater projects in Namibia, please let us know and we will add them to this list. Contact us on AfricaGWAtlas@bgs.ac.uk

BGR

The BGR (the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources) has been involved in a number of groundwater projects in Namibia, in cooperation with Namibian government institutions:

Geogenic Background Concentration of Dissolved Uranium in Groundwaters of the Ephemeral Khan- and Swakop River

The Geogenic Background Concentration of Dissolved Uranium in Groundwaters of the Ephemeral Khan- and Swakop River project was carried out in 2009 by BGR and partners in collaboration with the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME). The project measured background concentrations of geogenic (naturally-derived) dissolved Uranium in groundwater in the catchments of the ephemeral Swakop River and the tributary ephemeral Khan River. It was carried out prior to potential new uranium mining activities in the Central Namib.

More information on this project, with project reports and other literature, can be found on the project summary website.

Groundwater in the North of Namibia (Cuvelai-Etosha Basin)

BGR was involved in groundwater projects in the Cuvelai-Etosha transboundary basin in the north of Namibia, in cooperation with the Department of Water Affairs and Forestry (DWAF). These ran from 2009 to 2015.

The Groundwater for the North of Namibia project provided hydrogeological baseline information to improve understanding of the groundwater potential in the Cuvelai-Etosha basin in this part of Nambia, and introduce groundwater management procedures. It included two reports: one on Groundwater for the North of Namibia (CEB), Phase II; and one on Groundwater Management in the North of Namibia.

The Kalahari: Hydrogeology and Sedimentology of the Cuvelai-Etosha Basin project, also called the 'Kalahari Sediments' project, specifically investigated the paleoclimatological influence of the genesis of the sediments that make up the Cuvelai-Etosha basin aquifer in this part of Namibia. New boreholes were drilled and tested to investigate the groundwater resource.

Outputs from the project can be found on the project websites (links above).

The Hydrogeological Mapping Project (HYMNAM)

The Hydrogeological Mapping Project was carried out by BGR in partnership with the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Rural Development, the Geological Survey of Namibia (GSN) of the Ministry of Mines and Energy, and Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater). The project ran from 1999 to 2001 and produced a 1:1 million scale digital hydrogeological map of Namibia and accompanying explanation in the book 'Groundwater in Namibia'. This report can be downloaded from the project website at the link above, and the map is shown in the Hydrogeology of Namibia page.

Groundwater Investigations in Oshivelo, Eastern Caprivi and Omaheke

The Groundwater Investigations in Oshivelo, Eastern Caprivi and Omaheke project ran from 2002 to 2005, carried out by BGR in partnership with the Department of Water Affairs (DWA) within the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry (MAWF). The project investigated groundwater resources in three areas in the north and northeast of Namibia. Project outputs can be found on the project website.
