This study was undertaken by staff of the Energy & Marine Geoscience Programme of the British Geological Survey. Funding for the study was provided by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme as part of the M4ShaleGas Project; Measuring, monitoring, mitigating managing the environmental impact of shale gas.

Authors: Robert Cuss was lead author and contributed to all chapters; Andrew Wiseall contributed to all chapters; Jan Hennissen, Colin Waters, Simon Kemp, and Richard Haslam contributed to Hydraulic fracturing and Conclusions: knowledge gaps; Audrey Ougier-Simonin and Simon Holyoake contributed to Induced versus natural fractures and Conclusions: knowledge gaps.
