The Africa Groundwater Atlas is an online resource providing detailed information on groundwater for every country in Africa. The aim of the Atlas is to improve the availability and accessibility of robust information on groundwater, making it available to a wide range of stakeholders, so that this precious resource can be developed and used in a safe and sustainable way for many years to come.

The Africa Groundwater Atlas is currently under development

The Africa Groundwater Atlas is currently under development, so please excuse any empty pages and draft pages, and understand that there may be errors that have not yet been identified. Please do return over the coming months to see extended and improved content.

There are two sections:

The Africa Groundwater Atlas

This provides a gateway to the hydrogeology of every country in Africa. There is a profile of the hydrogeology of each country, with consistent information on the geology and hydrogeology of key aquifers, groundwater status and management, climate, hydrology, soils and land use. The country profiles have been co-written by groundwater experts from that country.

The Atlas also provides an overview of groundwater in Africa at a continental scale, summarizing the main hydrogeological environments and some of the key issues related to groundwater use and management, with links to further information and data.

The Atlas includes:

Hydrogeology by Country

A series of pages providing a summary of hydrogeology and groundwater issues for each country in Africa.

Background Information

  1. An Overview of Groundwater in Africa
  2. A summary of the major Hydrogeological Environments in Africa
  3. A series of Resource Pages providing an introduction and links to further information on issues related to groundwater in Africa, including:

- climate - land cover - soil - surface water - aquifer properties - recharge - groundwater quality - groundwater use - groundwater management - transboundary aquifers.

The Africa Groundwater Literature Archive

The Africa Groundwater Literature Archive is is an online database containing bibliographic references for thousands of items of literature related to groundwater in Africa. These include published and unpublished reports, journal papers, maps, books and academic theses. The full archive can be searched by country and thematic keywords; selected items can be searched by detailed location; and, where possible, links to full-text documents are provided.

Further background on this project can be found here. The Archive can be accessed Africa Groundwater Literature Archive | here
