Where present, this unit forms the base of the Chalk Group. It is mostly synonymous with the Glauconitic Marl of traditional classifications, except that in some areas (e.g. south-west Wiltshire), strata traditionally regarded as Glauconitic Marl are actually glauconitic calcareous sandstones, and have been re-classified as Upper Greensand (Bristow et al., 1997). The Glauconitic Marl is absent in the Shaftesbury district, over the Mid Dorset Swell and in south-east Devon (Bristow et al., 1997).
