The Seaford Chalk Member, c. 65 m thick, is marked by the upper of the two Shoreham Marls at the base, and the lowest of the Buckle Marls at the top (Mortimore, 1986a). The member comprises soft, pure white, regularly flinty chalk, with marl seams in the lower part, and locally conspicuous beds of inoceramid bivalve shell fragments (Mortimore, 1986a). Mortimore (1986a) subdivided the Seaford Chalk as follows:
