The paired Shoreham Marls, separated by c. 2 m of  nodular chalk, locally formed into hardgounds (Bar End Hardgrounds), define the highest unit of the Lewes Member (Mortimore, 1986a). The upper of the two Shoreham Marls is typically the more strongly developed, although one or other seam might be cut out on the Bar End Hardgrounds in condensed successions (Mortimore, 1986a). Hollow-centred, tubular flints (Shoreham Flints), analagous to the Lewes Tubular Flints, occur above and below the upper of the two Shoreham Marls (Mortimore, 1986a).

The rather sparse fauna associated with the Shoreham Marls mostly consists of the echinoids Micraster aff. turonensis and Echinocorys (Mortimore, 1986a).
