This picturesque combe is a deep ravine cut into the northern side of the Blackdown plateau and shows a fine section of the Lower Carboniferous Limestone in the quarries on the left hand side of the road from Burrington. Owing to the high dip which averages 60 degrees, the whole of the beds from D1 to the Old Red Sandstone with a thickness of 2600 feet can be studied within two thirds of a mile. These are correlated to the Gully Oolite of the Avon section. |

GA009 | P805707 | Cheddar. Bristol Excursion, April 19th 1919. As the Cheddar gorge mainly follows the strike we find that the greater part of the strata seen consists of the Seminula beds but the various horizons from C2 to D1 are represented. |

As the gorge runs south-westwards across the strata which are dipping due south we find on the right hand side a series of step like dip slopes and on the left mural faces and jointed bastions progressively increasing in grandeur as the valley deepens toward its outlet on the plain. |

GA009 | P805710 | Cheddar. Bristol Excursion, April 19th 1919. The valley bottom is dry and without any stream but as we approach the village of Cheddar a stream is seen to issue from an arch in the limestone. Its course underground has not been followed but is probably fed some several swallow holes in the Mendip hills. |

GA009 | P805732 | Aust Cliff. Bristol Excursion, April 22nd 1919. This cliff section exposed on the bank of the Severn at Aust shows in every detail the gradual passage from beds of Triassic age to those of the Jurassic system. The colour of these marls is due to the particular oxide of iron they contain. The Red marl having ferric oxide Fe2O3 while the green and blue have ferrous oxide FeO. |
GA009 | P805733 | Aust Cliff. Added note:Tea Green Marls, Red marls. |
GA009 | P805734 | Aust Cliff. Bristol Excursion, April 22nd 1919. The gypsum of the Red Keuper Marls occurs chiefly in the form of discontinuous vertical deposits like veins with which are connected smaller veins or strings ramifying through the surrounding rock. This mineral evidently fills up former cracks in the rock. |

GA009 | P805738 | Aust Cliff. Bristol Excursion, April 22nd 1919. Above theTea Green Marls occurs the well known Bone bed at the base of the Rhaetic or Penarth beds. At the south end of the section it consists of a dark hard compact limestone while in the centre it is a thin layer of siliceous grit loaded with fish teeth, scales, bones and dorsal spines together with vertebrae and coprolites of saurians. Above the bone bed are the black shales about a foot thick with Avicula contorta, Cardium rhaeticum and Pecten valoniensis. GA009 | P805739 | Aust Cliff. Bristol Excursion, April 22nd 1919. The continuity of these beds are [is] broken by five faults in which the downthrow side is to the south. Down the lines of faulting are thin veins of gypsum and celestine associated with calcite, this together with the hardening due to the pressure of faulting causes a little promontory or buttress which projects for several feet from the cliff face. |
GA009 | P805740 | Aust Cliff. |
GA009 | P805741 | Aust Cliff. Bristol Excursion, April 22nd 1919. Immediately above the Avicula contorta zone is a thin argillaceous limestone known as the Insect bed. This forms the base of the White Lias beds while the top of the cliff is formed by the Lima Series of the Lower Lias. Added note: White Lias, Insect Bed, Planorbis Bed, Avicula contorta zone, Bone Bed,Tea Green Marls, Keuper Red Marls. |
GA009 | P805742 | Aust Cliff. Bristol Excursion, April 22nd 1919. At each fault a small stream of water trickles over the face of the cliff. This is caused by the water percolating through the porous White Lias being dammed back against the marly clay below. |
