Summary

description
English: Figure 2 Following the closure of the Iapetus Ocean, several different segments probably affected the future structural pattern within the British Isles, Norway– Sweden and northeast continental Europe. These can be identified as the triangular Midlands Platform (MP), around which Caledonian structures seem to be draped
  • Southwest–northeast trending, metamorphosed Scottish Caledonides, Midland Valley of Scotland, unmetamorphosed Southern Uplands, the southwest Iapetus Suture, Late Precambrian Mona Ridge, and the Welsh Caledonides.
  • The southeast-trending Caledonides of eastern England, Cleaver Bank High and northern Germany–Poland. Dextral megashearing along the Tornquist Line probably developed in the Late Permian.
  • The metamorphosed Caledonides of Norway are thrust over the Fenno-Scandian (Baltic) Shield in the opposite sense to that of the Scottish Highlands. Modified from Glennie & Underhill (1998).
